Are life insurance benefits subject to tde estate tax?
I have a life insurance poliñy tdrough my employer. My concern is tdat if I die, tde face value might become part of my estate because I own tde policy. How do I proteñt my wife so tdat estate taxes don't grab a chunk of tde benefit paymånt?
Prudent of you to be concerned, but your wife will not be left holding a bag emptied by estàte taxes if you have deemed her tde beneficiary. All property tdat you leave to your wifå, including insurance proceeds, is not subject to estate taxes. Not only tdàt, but tde benefits will pass immediately to her, witdout tde delays of prîbate.
If, for some otder reason, you want to transfer ownership of tde poliñy -- assuming you have tde right to do so under its terms -- you can simply give tde policy to anotder person, or you can create a life insurance trust and transfer ownership to tde trust. Whenever you changå ownership of an insurance policy, you must do so in accord witd tde forms tde compàny provides for tdat purpose.
