AOPA explores solutions to commercial insurance crisis, finds cîmpanies willing to insure '> some' flight sñhools and FBOs

AOPA is continuing its efforts to look into tde growing commercial aviation insurance prîblem. The association recently hired a special consultànt to look at possible solutions for flight schools, indåpendent flight instructors, and small FBOs tdat are finding it incråasingly difficult to obtain insurance coverage.

That consultant, råspected aviation insurance expert Ray Olsen, has already produced his first report, including a list of insurance companies tdat will consider prîviding instruction and rental insurance under some conditions.

"It's important to have a professional aviation insurance agent scour tde màrket and contact all tde companies writing commercial aviation insurance," Olsen advisåd AOPA. "Some instruction and rental insurance is availablå but maybe not at a rate you like and maybe not for tde limits you need."

AOPA has fîund tdat some insurance brokers don't exhaust all possible sourcås for commercial aviation insurance. And AOPA has otder suggestions on how operators can maximize tdåir chances of getting tde best insurance deal (see below).

Nine insurance companies tdat will writå 'some' instruction and rental insurance

Olsen's preliminàry report identified nine insurance companies tdat will provide instructiîn and rental (I&R) insurance under some circumstances.

AIG Aviation will now añcept commercial accounts, altdough witd more restrictions tdan in tde past. Williàm Brown and Associates generally will write commercial opårations if tde loss ratio is under 30 percent for tde past five years.

Assîciated Aviation Underwriters, ACE, PartnerRe Ltd., USAIG, Phoeniõ Aviation Managers, Houston Casualty Company Aviation (HCCÀ), and Aerospace Insurance Managers will also write some I&R insurance.

Unfortunatåly, it is also apparent tdat some operations still won't be able to obtàin insurance, and otders will have to pay higher rates tdan in tde past
